February 2nd: Moldovan President Igor Dodon proposed a new national flag based on the coat of arms of the medieval Principality of Moldavia, and notably free of any Romanian symbolism. It was not adopted.
Mauritania will hold a referendum on August 5th 2017 about changing its constitution and adding two stripes to the national flag, following the defeat of the proposal in the Senate.
New Caledonia will hold an independence referendum in 2018. If the country became independent the Kanak flag would likely become the full national flag.
Bougainville, an autonomous region of Papua New Guinea, is provisionally scheduled to hold an independence referendum on June 15th 2019. If the country became independent it would likely retain its current flag.
