February 2nd: Moldovan President Igor Dodon proposed a new national flag based on the coat of arms of the medieval Principality of Moldavia, and notably free of any Romanian symbolism. It was not adopted.
Mauritania will hold a referendum later this year on changing its constitution and adding two stripes to the national flag, following the defeat of the proposal in the Senate.
Puerto Rico will hold a non-binding status referendum on June 11th 2017. Voters will be asked to choose between independence or statehood. Any decision would be subject to Congressional approval. If Puerto Rico were to become a state, the American flag would add a 51st star on the following July 4th.
New Caledonia will hold an independence referendum in 2018. If the country became independent the Kanak flag would likely become the full national flag.
Bougainville, an autonomous region of Papua New Guinea, is provisionally scheduled to hold an independence referendum on June 15th 2019. If the country became independent it would likely retain its current flag.
