Historical Notes

July 1: The United Kingdom traded Heligoland to Germany in exchange for Zanzibar. As part of the deal Witu was transferred to the United Kingdom and incorporated into Zanzibar.
July 4: The United States added five more stars (for Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota and Washington) to its flag, bringing the total to 43. Even though the 43-star flag was technically official for an entire year, it was rarely used in practice since Idaho had only joined the Union on July 3 and Wyoming joined a week later.
October 7: The Republic of Salvador changed its name to the Republic of El Salvador.
Sometime in 1890: Annam adopted a new flag.
Sometime in 1890: China changed the shape of its flag.
Sometime around 1890: Swaziland adopted a flag.
