January 1: New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria and Western Australia united to form the Commonwealth of Australia. The Federation Flag was used in a semi-official capacity.
March 23: The Philippines were conquered by the United States.
June 11: The Cook Islands were annexed by New Zealand.
