Historical Notes

March 10: Vietnam declared independence from French Indochina under Japanese influence.
March 13: Cambodia declared independence from French Indochina under Japanese influence and changed its name to Kampuchea.
March 27: The Japanese puppet state in Burma collapsed and British rule was restored.
April 4: The German puppet state of Slovakia was taken over by the Soviet Union and restored to Czechoslovakia.
April 8: Laos declared independence from French Indochina under Japanese influence.
April 27: Austria declared independence from Germany.
May 1: Austria adopted a state flag.
May 8: Vietnam adopted a new flag.
May 8: Nazi Germany capitulated to the Allies. The puppet Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia was dissolved and restored to Czechoslovakia. The puppet state of Croatia was dissolved and restored to Yugoslavia.
May 23: Germany temporarily ceased to have a national flag when the Swastika flag was banned.

June 10: Mongolia adopted a new flag.
August 15: Japan surrendered to the Allies and renounced its sovereignty over Korea. The puppet governments in Manchukuo and Mengjiang were dissolved and restored to China.
August 17: Indonesia declared independence from the Netherlands
August 25: The French protectorate over Laos was restored.
September 5: Vietnam adopted a new flag.
September 9: Thailand changed its name back to Siam.
October 11: Spain enlarged the coat of arms of its flag.
October 12: The French protectorate over Cambodia was restored.
October 24: The United Nations Organization was established.
October 24: Byelorussia and Ukraine, two non-independent subdivisions of the Soviet Union, joined the United Nations as founding members.
November 12: Occupied Germany was granted a provisional civil ensign.
