Historical Notes

January 18: The civil flag of Honduras (with minor modifications) became the country's sole national flag.

February 24: Western Samoa added a fifth star to its flag.
March 1: Cyrenaica adopted a flag.
April 1: Newfoundland became a province of Canada.
May 23: West Germany was established in American, British, and French sectors of Germany.
June 2: Transjordan was renamed Jordan.
June 14: South Vietnam became independent from France.
July 19: Laos became independent from France.
July 20: Siam changed its name back to Thailand.
August 8: Bhutan adopted a flag for the signing ceremony of the Indo-Bhutanese Treaty of Friendship. It was the last country to be flagless for any substantial length of time.
August 18: Hungary adopted a new flag.
October 1: The People's Republic of China was declared.
October 7: East Germany was established in the Soviet sector of Germany.
November 21: Ukraine adopted a new flag.
December 8: The rump government of the Republic of China relocated to Taiwan.
Sometime in 1949: Qatar simplified and standardized its national flag.
