Historical Notes

January 3: Barbados, Jamaica, the Leeward Islands, Trinidad and Tobago, and the Windward Islands were combined to form the West Indies Federation.
February 22: Egypt and Syria joined together to form the United Arab Republic.

February 22: Togo removed the French flag from its flag.
Sometime in February: Abu Dhabi adopted a new flag.
October 21: The Malagasy Republic adopted a flag.
November 10: Around a month after becoming independent from France, Guinea adopted a national flag. It was the last independent country to not have a flag for any length of time.
November 24: The French Sudan colony became the autonomous Sudanese Republic.
November 25: The French colony of Senegal became an autonomous republic.
December 1: The French colony of Oubangi-Chari became the autonomous Central African Republic.
