Historical Notes

January 1: Cameroon became independent from a French-administered trusteeship.
January 1: The British Virgin Islands were separated from the Leeward Islands Territory and the West Indies Federation.
April 6: Cyprus adopted a provisional flag.
April 14: Brazil added a star to its flag.
April 27: American Samoa adopted a flag.
April 27: Togo became independent from a French-administered trusteeship.
June 20: Mali became independent from France.
June 26: The Malagasy Republic became independent from France.
June 26: British Somaliland became independent as Somaliland. It adopted the flag of Italian Somalia in advance of a planned unification.
July 1: Somaliand and Italian Somalia united to form the independent state of Somalia.
July 1: The Belgian Congo became independent as the Republic of the Congo. It was called "Congo-Léopoldville" to differentiate it from neighbouring Republic of the Congo with its capital in Brazzaville.
July 4: The United States added a 50th star (for Hawaii) to its flag.
August 1: Dahomey became independent from France.
August 3: Niger became independent from France.
August 5: Upper Volta became independent from France.
August 7: The Ivory Coast became independent from France.
August 9: Gabon adopted a new flag.
August 11: Chad became independent from France.
August 13: The Central African Republic became independent from France.
August 15: Congo-Brazzaville became independent from France.
August 16: Cyprus became independent from the United Kingdom.
August 17: Gabon became independent from France.
August 20: Senegal declared independence from the Mali Federation. The remaining Sudanese Republic continued identifying itself as the Mali Federation until September 22, when officially renamed itself the Republic of Mali.
October 1: Nigeria became independent from the United Kingdom.
November 15: The British Virgin Islands added a scroll to the badge on its flag.
November 28: Mauritania became independent from France.
