Historical Notes

January 18: The Aden Colony and Protectorate was amalgamated into the Federation and Protectorate of South Arabia.
March 8: Syria adopted a new flag.
June 8: Following a Ba'athist coup, Iraq adopted the same flag as Syria.
July 1: Congo-Léopoldville adopted a new flag.
July 13: The Comoros adopted a flag.
July 22: Sarawak became independent from the United Kingdom.
August 31: The British colony of North Borneo became self-governing under a new flag.
August 31: Singapore became independent from the United Kingdom.
September 16: Malaya, Singapore, Sarawak, and North Borneo united to form Malaysia. Three stripes were added to the Malayan flag to create the flag of the new union.
December 10: The United Kingdom terminated its protectorate over Zanzibar.
December 12: Kenya became independent from the United Kingdom.
December 31: The Central African Federation was dissolved into Northern Rhodesia, Southern Rhodesia, and Nyasaland.
