Historical Notes

January 1: Aruba seceded from the Netherlands Antilles and became a constituent country of the Netherlands in its own right. The Netherlands Antilles removed a star from its flag
February 25: Ferdinand Marcos was forced out of power in the Philippines and the previous shade of blue on the flag was restored.
February 25: Haiti readopted its blue over red bicolour.
October 21: The Marshall Islands ceased to be part of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands, becoming a sovereign state in free association with the United States.
November 3: Micronesia and the Northern Mariana Islands cased to be part of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands, the former becoming a sovereign state in free association with the United States and the latter becoming a U.S. commonwealth.
November 3: With the separation of the Marshall Islands, Micronesia and the Northern Mariana Islands, Palau became the sole remaining district of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands. Its flag was used in place of the previous ring of stars.
