Historical Notes

January 13: Iraq added Saddam Hussein's handwriting (reading "God is great") to the flag.
May 28: Ethiopia's transitional government removed the seal from the national flag.
June 10: Congo readopted its original flag.
June 25: Croatia and Slovenia declared independence from Yugoslavia.
September 4: Ukraine adopted a new flag.
September 6: Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania were formally granted independence from the Soviet Union.
September 8: Macedonia declared independence from Yugoslavia.
September 19: Byelorussia changed its name to Belarus and adopted a new flag.
December 8: The Soviet Union effectively ceased to be a subject of international law with the signing of the Alma Ata Protocol. Russia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan became independent states. Russia assumed the Soviet Union's membership at the United Nations.
