Historical Notes

January 24: Turkmenistan changed the ratio of its flag from 1:2 to 2:3 and slightly adjusted the carpet pattern.
June 11: In a joint declaration, the Cook Islands and New Zealand affirmed that they were separate and independent states. From this point on the Cook Islands substantially increased its participation in the international community.
October 25: Rwanda adopted a new flag.
November 13: The unrecognized Taliban government in Afghanistan was removed from power following an American-led invasion.
