Historical Notes

February 4: Yugoslavia reconstituted itself as the State Union of Serbia and Montenegro. The joint parliament was to decide on a new flag within 60 days, but the process was derailed and the union was ultimately dissolved before any new national symbols could be adopted.
March 1: The Vexillological Association of Réunion adopted a flag for Réunion depicting the Piton de la Fournaise volcano. Called Lö Mahavéli (combining the words for "beautiful country" and "morning star") or Volcan Rayonnat ("Radiant Volcano"), the flag saw substantially more widespread use than the previous proposal.
August 27: The Angolan Constitutional Commission selected a new flag for the country. The central emblem was based on the ancient Tchitundu Hulu rock paintings. The flag was never adopted.
